How to Edit Your Site with Chat and Sections (AI Site Builder)
Last updated October 3, 2026 · Owners and office staff
The editor is where you shape your site. Your site’s preview takes most of the screen. On the left, the assistant asks What would you like to change?: tell it in plain words, or choose one of five big actions (Change the look, Edit text, Add a page, Photos, Business details). Your own edits are free and save as you type. AI changes cost a few credits and are always shown to you first.
Before you start
- Open the editor: go to Tools > Website and choose Edit website on your site.
- AI changes use credits. The request box says what most changes use, and the bottom of the left side shows what you have left (“N AI credits left”). See AI Credits in the Site Builder.
Steps
Ask for a change
- Type what you want in the box under What would you like to change?, for example:
- “Make the home page shorter”
- “Add a gallery of our patio projects”
- “Change the headline to Fresh lawns every week”
- “Say we’re open weekends”
- Press the arrow button (or Enter).
- The preview shows the change, and a bar on the preview sums it up, for example “Added a Gallery to the home page”.
- Choose Keep it on that bar to save it, or Undo to leave your site as it was.
Nothing is saved until you choose Keep it. If the assistant can’t make a change safely, it tells you so and you are not charged.
Edit the words yourself
- Choose Edit text, then click any part of your page in the preview, or pick it from the list.
- The left side shows that part’s fields, such as Headline, Subheading, Main button or Paragraphs.
- Type your changes. They save on their own; All changes saved at the top confirms it.
- Choose Rewrite with AI to have the assistant reword it (you choose Keep it or Undo as usual).
- Open More options to:
- pick a different style for this part
- Move up or Move down
- Hide it (or Show it again)
- Delete it
- On a services part you can also choose Pick icons with AI to have your Designer choose an icon for each service.
- Close it with the X or by pressing Esc.
Change a photo
- Click a part of the page that has a photo.
- Choose Change photo to pick one from your library or add a new one.
- Fill in the Photo description. This helps Google and people who use screen readers.
Add a part to a page
- Choose Edit text (or More tools > Parts of this page).
- Under Add a part to this page, choose the kind of part and choose Add.
Preview on a phone
Use the two small buttons at the top right of the preview (computer and phone) to switch the preview size. Most visitors will see your site on a phone, so check it there. On your own phone the editor shows a request box and a Tools button at the bottom.
More tools and Advanced mode
Everything else, such as renaming or hiding pages, the Google headline and description of a page, the top and bottom of every page, your AI team’s tips, the blog and your site’s other pages, is under More tools at the bottom left. Choose Always show all tools there to switch to Advanced mode, which shows page tabs, the Page parts and Check my site tabs and the one-page switch all the time. Choose Simple mode in the same place to go back.
What happens next
Your changes stay in your site until you publish. If your site is already live, the status changes to Live · changes not published yet and visitors keep seeing the published version until you choose Publish. See Publish Your Site and Connect a Domain.
Tips
- One request at a time works best. “Shorten the About page” is clearer than a list of five changes.
- Name the page or part if the change is for one place, for example “On the Services page, mention leaf cleanup”.
- Reviews are never written by AI. Add your customers’ reviews on the Reviews page (Site menu, Reviews). Then click your Reviews part and tick the reviews to show under Reviews to show.
Troubleshooting
- “This site changed in another window”: you had the editor open twice. The editor loaded the latest version. Make your change again.
- “Choose Undo or Keep it on the change first”: a change is still waiting on the preview. Decide on it, then carry on.
- “Not saved” appears at the top: you may be offline. Check your connection; your last change was not saved.
- The preview shows a plain outline instead of the site: the preview isn’t ready for a moment. Your edits still save.
- You’re out of AI credits: the request box says so and offers Buy credits. You can still change text and photos yourself, free.
